Some sub-regions of the South West are famous for red wines (typically reminiscent of red Bordeaux wines), while other territories are better known for white wines. One of the most terroir-focused wine regions of France, Burgundy is famous for both reds and whites, specifically the two main grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – as both grapes originated here in Burgundy. The Loire Valley is comprised of four sub-regions: Upper Loire is known for Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre (thyme, lime peel and grassy notes) Touraine’s cold climate lends itself well to Chenin Blancs of diverse flavor profiles and spicy Cabernet Franc reds (notes of bell pepper and red cherry) Anjou-Saumur produces dry Savennières, sweet Coteaux du Layon and Saumur reds while Pays Nantais is known for dry Muscadet and Melon de Bourgogne whites.
